Recent developments in brain research have provided physical educators and play advocates with an avenue that connects physical activity with academic success. There is now a connection that provides us with substantial research that demonstrates that cognitive benefits can result from quality physical activity and play opportunities.
Rockwerx is a major climbing wall manufacturer with offices in central Massachusetts. The Climbing Business Journal or CBJ just published its Gyms and Trends of 2013 in its December 30, 2013 issue. CBJ named Rockwerx this year’s top builder of new traditional rock climbing gyms.
It has happened more than once in my 25 years teaching. A classroom teacher walks into the gym and says, “Hey, can you have them just run around a bunch and let them burn off some energy?” Or another classic, “It must be nice just to run recess all day.” If you have taught elementary physical education long enough, you have heard those lines and probably many more. However, as physical education teachers, we know that our classes are much more than “just running around.”
